Recruitment is both a rewarding and challenging career. Because it is a service industry it is important that Recruiters have a strong customer service focus. After all, reputation and word of mouth referrals are essential for success in the service sector.
In the typical role of a Recruiter there are two major points of contact, your clients and your candidates. Both are equally important. Having a solid client base is essential as these are the people who hire your candidates. However, having lots of clients is of little consequence if you can’t recruit candidates for those clients. Therefore, you need to build a reputation within both the sector you recruit for and the labour market that feeds the sector. To do this you need to work hard, network, build relationships and deliver on your word. Also, you must take a long term view and not be out for the ‘quick buck’.
There are a number of traits that typically manifest themselves in a successful Recruiter. These include:
- Tenacity – sticking to the task and not being put off easily
- Focus – recognising what’s important and not getting distracted
- Ambition – wanting to be successful in what you do
- Drive – self motivation, commitment and energy
- Confidence – a genuine belief in your own abilities
- Sense of Fun - sometimes you just have to laugh
If you believe you possess the above traits you may be on your way to a successful career in recruitment. Ideally you will be a dynamic, tenacious individual who is career minded, money driven and naturally comfortable in a sales environment. The mechanics of the profession can be taught and learnt, but without the desire to succeed coupled with a strong sales background these personality traits would be of little consequence.
Recruitment is not easy…and it’s not for everyone.
